Weight loss in the Couple a Taboo Subject ?

weight loss

As summer approaches and sunbathing, many French people want to make efforts to lose some weight. In this case, does "bead hunting" become a couple affair, or is it still a taboo subject? An Ifop survey focuses on this topic, and shows that current standards still affect women more than men, while women often have more weight to lose.

Who says been told also the dreaded "trial" of the jersey, or the anxiety of not being thin enough on the beach. Dedicated to weight loss and ways to feel good about yourself,
the Naturavox information site has commissioned Ifop a survey to see more clearly on this issue within the couple, and on how the Desirable body quest affects men and women as they approach the holidays. Unsurprisingly, the results of the study indicate that it is women who want to lose weight the most: 67% of them feel the need, of which 58% of women are of normal body size. Only half (53%) of men think they need it.

As for the number of pounds to lose, men feel they should lose as much weight as women, 9 kg, despite a higher average body mass index (BMI). "The results confirm that the approach of the jersey, the" weight constraint "always weighs more heavily on women than men and this regardless of their real build. In a country like France where the underweight of women is more valued than in the rest of Europe, thinness is therefore still in the summer an issue primarily female as it remains a criterion closely associated with female beauty. », Explains Francois Kraus of Ifop.

Overweight, a cause of rupture?

When it comes to evoking the silhouette of his spouse, it seems that the French are less severe since only a third of them, men and women, consider that he should also lose weight. In the first place, men under 25 years of age (64% of boys want their partner to lose weight, compared to 32% of girls) living in the regions. But this trend is reversed with age: in the over 65 years, it is women who feel that their partner has pounds to lose. Still, talking about it with the other is not easy, because only 24% of respondents have already dared to get this message to their spouse, especially women.

And among French people who have already found their spouse over weight, a third of them, both men and women, admit to having already been embarrassed because of the weight of their partner in public places. "It is interesting to note that no member of the couple escapes this pressure of particularly strong thinness during a period when the unveiling of bodies undeniably confronts them with the dominant corporal norms," adds Francois Kraus. Men are slightly more likely to end a relationship with someone because of their weight, although in fact only 4% of French people have already left their partner for this reason.

If the extra pounds are not a real risk for the couple, they are however for the drag. Thus, 23% of men against 17% of women have already considered not going further with someone they liked because of its weight. And conversely: 35% of women and 30% of men admit that they did not approach the person they liked because they felt they were overweight. Not to mention that being in a relationship is also a reason that can push you to take and lose weight. Indeed, 3 out of 4 French admit they have grown since they are in a relationship, and if 38% of respondents tried to lose weight at the same time as their partner, only 13% have succeeded.
