Papillomavirus a new Vaccine Available

Papillomavirus a new Vaccine Available

Papillomaviruses cause cancer of the cervix, anus or ENT. This is why since 2006, it is recommended to vaccinate girls aged 11 to 14 years. A new vaccine is available in France.

In France, 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, 90% of which are due to papillomavirus infection. But, despite the existence of vaccines, immunization coverage in France is one of the lowest in Europe.
The High Authority of Health estimates it to less than 20%. The 2014-2019 Cancer Plan aims to reach 60%.

A new vaccine, Gardasil 9

Until now, there were two vaccines: Gardasil and Cervarix, which protected against four types of papillomavirus for the first and two for the second.
Gardasil 9 is a new vaccine that offers a broader protective beam: it is effective against 9 types of human papillomavirus, 5 more than the previous Gardasil. Evaluated by the High Authority Health, the latter estimates its level of protection at 90%.

How much does Gardasil 9 cost?

This new vaccine, Gardasil 9, costs 135.68 euros. It is reimbursed at 65% by the Health Insurance. It should be given in two doses to young girls aged 11 to 14, but it can also be administered to young girls aged 15 to 19 in catch-up, as well as to gay boys under 26 years of age. The Technical Committee on Immunizations is thinking about offering it to all boys as well.

It is currently offered in 20 countries.
