Omega-3 Without Effect in Diabetics

Omega

These fatty acids from fish oil do not protect diabetics against cardiovascular disease. A large study, presented at a European congress of cardiology, has just shown it omega-3.

People with diabetes have a two- to three-fold risk of cardiovascular disease. In this context, prevention is particularly important.

A study, presented on August 26, 2018 at the European Society of Cardiology Congress held in Munich, Germany, monitored 15,480 type 1 and 2 diabetics for more than seven years.
At start-up, these people did not have a particular cardiovascular problem.

This study compared patients who took 1 gram of omega-3 daily as a dietary supplement, to those who took a placebo containing olive oil.

In the end, the number of cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, transient ischemic attack, cerebrovascular accident) and deaths are not significantly different between the two groups.

Numerous epidemiological studies have led to recommending the consumption of oily fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines ...), rich in omega-3, to prevent cardiovascular diseases. This new research sows doubt in diabetics taking omega-3 supplements.
