A miscarriage, how is it going?

The management of an early miscarriage

Dr. Hélène Legrand, a gynecologist attached to the maternity of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul (Paris), discusses the different possible management of a miscarriage ... In the case of so-called early miscarriage, the fetus ( abortion product, as doctors call it) is usually expelled naturally. This event is often accompanied by bleeding and / or contractions more or less painful even if, for some moms, the miscarriage can also go unnoticed.

When the expulsion of the fetus is thus natural, hospitalization is not necessary.
If the miscarriage is detected by ultrasound, the doctor may decide to program a suction. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually only requires one day of hospitalization. Specifically, we introduce a small tube connected to a pump to suck the inside of the uterus and relieve the mother.

Other doctors prefer instead to wait for the natural expulsion of the fetus to avoid hospitalization more or less well lived. However, it must be known that several days can pass between the announcement of the termination of pregnancy and the arrival of miscarriage. A wait often very distressing for moms too. Many of them speak of helplessness and loneliness. Nevertheless, if abortion is difficult to trigger, medical intervention is always possible.
